Hair falling out and issues with Soy.

My hair is falling out.

I've been noticing it more and more. And maybe it's just because it's darker that it's more apparent. But I will use my conditioner, and when I rinse out my hair, this...huge mass is stuck to my hand. It doesn't seem natural. And it keeps falling out for like...an hour or two after I wash it. So I'm going to head over to the store in a bit and pick myself up some vitamins designed to help your hair, and then I'm going to look it up and see what I'm lacking from my diet to try and counter it.

It's just...a physical reminder of what I'm doing to my body.

I'm not starving. Far from it.
But I'm still low. 600 calories a day.
I eat less in one day than many people eat in one meal.

And I'm supposed to be at 1800 to maintain.
1800.
I can't wrap my head around that.

I hyperventilate when thinking about 1000.

When I get down to 103, I'm going to slowly work myself back up to 1500. That's my ultimate goal. Slow and steady restart my metabolism so I can maintain my weight at 1200-1500 a day. I don't want to live like this forever. I really don't. And I hope the hair falling out thing is just...me noticing it more because I'm paranoid.

I'm also going to start trying various types of Semitarianism. I'm not sure who's heard of that, but it's this spin off of vegan/vegetarianism. I'm an activist. I won't wear diamonds because of the damage it does to earth and the people on it, so it shocks me sometimes that I can eat meat. But it's something I've struggled with for years and have never, EVER been able to give up. Be it because of addiction, or because my hormones make me actually NEED the particular protein in certain meats (or perhaps it's the fact that the recent popularity of soy as a good "organic" food is ridiculous because over 90% of it is genetically modified no matter what the packaging says, and that the very production of it is one of the leading causes of stripping of much of the foreign eco systems, such as rainforests and other fragile areas in order to meet demands of the tide of "I MUST HAVE SOY" diets...), but I can't really do the vegetarian thing well.

So Semitarianism is the act of going "partial". You have days where you don't eat any meat at all, and i can do that. I do that already. But I want to make it official. Find days when maybe I go full vegetarian (no chicken, fish, milk, cheese), and other days when I can have that. Because if most of the consumers in the world cut back even a LITTLE on their meat consumption, we could get rid of so much methane and carbon emissions that it would probably help more than all the regulations on fuel efficiency and hybrid cars in the WORLD ever could.

So yeah.

That's what I'm doing.

Anyway, I forgot the rest of what I wanted to write.

Awesome ♥

  1. I think cutting back even a little as far as animal products are concerned is wonderful accomplishment. I've been a vegetarian all my life, so has my dad, and my brother. We have nearly 100 years of vegetarian experience between us. I eat tofu maybe once a week and my brother doesn't eat any soy products at all. You can easily get all your protein from other sources like beans, lentils, and even seaweed. Eventually if you keep cutting down on your animal product consumption your body will start to lose the ability to process those products and then it will be quite easy for you become a full vegetarian. I've seen this happen numerous times with people who were "addicted" to meat and thought they could never give it up.
    I hope that helps a little : )
    Stay strong and good luck!

  2. I like that idea, of Semitarianism. I've tried giving up meat many times, but it never lasts for long. :( But you sound like you're doing good! Besides the hair thing of course, but that can be fixed with vitamins of course. :) Stay strong!

  3. Have you been growing your hair out? If so, the hair that's falling out might just look like more than you're accustomed to because the strands are longer. My hair is really long and constantly falling out -- I always have a big nasty hairball in the drain after taking a shower -- but it's not getting any thinner.

  4. Just makes sure you get your protein! (actually, I think that's what hair is-dead protein. I think.)

Good plan to start slow on the vegetarian/vegan thing!

  5. when my sister lost a lot of weight, her hair fell out too, but it didn't all fall out, she still had a decent amount when she began to get better. if that helps? i'm not sure but i don't want you stressing too much, stress causes it to fall out too
    goodluck with everything
i hope it's all good and it works out the way you want

  6. Hey! First, I would like to say that I feel smarter for having read this post. I've heard of the concept of only being vegetarian sometimes but I never knew what it was called. Very inspiring, let me know how it goes and I might try it. Second, thanks for your comment on my blog. I need support from friends like you to help me meet my goal, and I will be sure to keep up to date on my progress. Have a great day!

  7. 600 a day is definitely low enough to have hair falling out, particularly if you're not eating enough fat. I had the most hair loss when I was eating fat-free everything on a consistent basis.

Of course, it's also true that more hair will fall out if it's pretty long. I've noticed that more hair has been falling out for me lately, but as someone else said I haven't noticed a change in thickness, so I think it's because my hair is the longest it's been since high school (and maybe longer than in high school).

  9. I just started reading your blog and I really like it. =] I think we have a lot in common.

I totally know what you mean about your hair falling out. I realize it more in the shower when I shampoo/condition my hair, too.

I went vegan for a little while, then stuck with vegetarian, and know I only eat chicken/turkey/chesse occasionally, but no other animal products. I also use vegan skin care and vegan protein shakes. If you need any help with the whole vegan/vegetarian thing just ask. I may be able to help.
